ACT/SAT Program


This is a Comprehensive program to establish strong foundation in ACT/SAT test subjects and provide unique tips to improve test taking skills. A total of 25 2hr classes in Math, Science, Reading and English. The program gets the student to conquer SAT/ACT while Improving understanding of test subjects through interactive discussion and focusing on understanding of concepts.

Taylor Brasher, is a well experienced ACT/SAT instructor with a proven record of training for past 20 years. He has had numerous scholarship winners in several collages including Georgia tech. Couple of presidential scholarship winner at South Alabama.  


Class Outline


 We will review the parts of speech and how they function in a sentence in the nominative, accusative, dative, and genitive case. (This will include reviewing the pronoun chart in each case and verb conjugation in the past, present, and future tense.) We will also cover the rules of grammar as they relate to the parts of speech. Special emphasis will be places on punctuation in sentences and showing students how to determine which type of punctuation should be used in any given situation. 

Students will also be shown why reading the entire passage for each English section is must. Because there are so many subcategories concerning the parts of speech and the rules of grammar, we can not list them all, but I will cover every one during the time we study English. There will be two extra sessions during our English course study when students can stay after class on two separate occasions to cover rules of grammar for advanced English, which will not be, at least not all, covered on the ACT, but will make the overall English section much simpler for those who choose to stay and learn. In these extra sessions we will also cover parts of speech for advanced English such as participles, infinitives, and gerunds, and we will discuss their roles in sentences and paragraphs.

This is a method I have used numerous time, and with students who do all the work and actively participate, I always see at least a 5-10% improvement in their overall English score. A number of students have scored 33 or higher, and one student has scored as high as 35 in English. 


We will begin by doing a quick review of Pre-Algebra in the first part of our first class to make sure everyone understands their order of operations. Then, we will move on to Algebra I, which makes up approximately 45% of the entire math section. Some of the topics that will be covered in reviewing Algebra I include word problems containing percent increase and decrease, pattern recognition in a number series, and  solving both single and multi-variable equations. We will then move on to Geometry, which comprises approximately 45% more of the test. The class will review area and volume formulas for any figure that can appear on the test. Theorems and axioms will also be covered in order to help students answer questions about unknown measurements of figures and angles on the test.the last topic that will be covered during regular class time will triangles.  Particular focus will be placed on right triangles, the ratio of their side measurements to their angle measurements, and how they can be used to solve complex geometric problems. A small amount of time will be spent covering Algebra II and Trigonometry. We will also have two extra sessions where I will go over math team tips and tricks that are not learned in school, which can make the work much easier, as well as going over logic based problem solving, a new addition to the ACT that schools and books do not cover. 


We will begin by reviewing the three different types of questions that are asked about each passage on the reading comprehension section and how to identify each type in their various forms. Then, we will review the five paragraph essay. By becoming familiar with the format, or improving a student's understanding if he or she is already familiar with the format of the five paragraph essay, a student will then be able to dissect any reading comprehension passage in order to find the answer to any one of the three types of questions asked on the reading comprehension section of the ACT. Once students are comfortable identifying the types of questions and locating them in different passages, the class will review common elements of British/American Literature from the late 1600's to the early 1900's such as themes, vocabulary, voice, and characters. We will be doing this because these passages are the ones where students continually miss the most questions on the ACT. As with English and Math, we will also be having two extra sessions during the time that we are reviewing reading. During these sessions, students will get a review of some of the more famous older authors and works they can expect to see on the test, as well as an alternative approach to doing the reading comprehension section for those students who find themselves short on time or simply unable to understand certain passages. 


We will begin by reviewing the individual steps of the scientific method. Then, we will move on to learning how to read and interpret the different kinds of charts and graphs that are common among ACT science sections. Once students know the steps of the scientific method, their function, and are capable of reading and interpreting the different kinds of charts and graphs, the class will begin reviewing the most common types of science passages, which appear on almost every ACT. These include passages about nuclear decay, genetics (the passing of a certain trait or traits to offspring in any number of generations), ground water absorption, acid rain/pollution, and some form of experiment dealing with electricity and voltage. Students will learn to identify the hypothesis of every experiment in each passage, the independent and dependent variables and controls in each experiment, and the relationship between the independent and dependent variables and the results of each experiment. Once students can do this, they will be able to answer almost every Science question on the ACT.  We will have two extra sessions with science as well where students can come to learn how to read the periodic table as a whole, as well as the individual element squares and what each number in the square means. This knowledge is not necessary, but can make the Science section much easier to understand and easier to finish. 

Christmas Break:

We will be having one voluntary attendance class during the Christmas break. At this class I will be teaching helpful test taking techniques that, due to the thoroughness of our class and the material we will cover will not be necessary, but can make certain questions, or, in some cases entire sections, much easier. Some of these techniques include how to quickly answer questions from the English section asking the student to put sentences or paragraphs in order, how to use math team and MENSA formulas, which everyone will be given at the end of the course, but I will be using in examples during the session for anyone who comes to see, how to take an alternative approach to Reading Comprehension if every passage is extremely hard and still guarantee an extremely high rate of right answers, and how to quickly identify the difference between a logic question and a data question on the Science section so that students can allow themselves more time at the end to review their answers. As this will be Christmas break we know students and families will be traveling, but anyone who can attend will find this session very beneficial in helping them achieve their overall goal score on the ACT.
